Biomechanical issues may be contributing to dysfunction or pain in your body. How the foot functions in each step, how you swing your arms or move your hips can impact posture, joint health, balance, and other musculoskeletal elements. Jesse Foster, DPT, physical therapist, gives you a chance to test video-assisted gait analysis equipment and get professional insight on how you walk.

Shoulders and the Rotator Cuff
The complex anatomy of the shoulder, including the rotator cuff, allows for great strength, mobility and function. Unfortunately, shoulder pain and injury are quite common. Anthony Buoncristiani, MD will lead this discussion of anatomy and function of the shoulder, common shoulder injuries, and an update of the best prevention and treatment options. Dr. Buoncristiani is fellowship trained in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery.

No Bullying Allowed!
Within the school setting or the social scene, our kids can face challenges as they learn how to navigate personal relationships. Darrel Harris, youth program coordinator for the Advocates, will cite anti-bullying programs that are research-based and getting good results. Darrel will provide tools and wisdom to help adults help kids become bully-resistant and learn to use compassion and kindness instead of bully behavior in peer interactions.

Chair Yoga
Chair yoga provides the same benefits as traditional yoga, but is a great alternative when balance or physical limitations make getting on and off of a mat difficult. Katherine Pleasants, certified yoga instructor, will teach you techniques to stretch and strengthen your spine and release overall tension. Wear comfortable clothing and come ready to participate in this effective and safe approach to yoga.

Advance Directives, Living Wills, and Estate Planning
End of life planning is an important yet often overwhelming process. Carolyn Nystrom, RN, director of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley and Allan Fisher, estate planning professional from Thompson and Associates and St. Luke’s Health Foundation estate planning advisor, will combine years of experience to help you move forward in making decisions to take care of your future, your loved ones, and your assets.

Let’s Walk this Talk!
Back by popular demand, this Brown Bag will get you out on the bike path along the beautiful Big Wood near St. Luke’s. Mary Kay Foley, physical therapist, will improve your walking with attention to posture, heart rate, and cardio-walking techniques that suit your fitness level to boost cardio, muscular, and mental health. In case of bad weather, an indoor walking workout is planned. Bring walking shoes and a water bottle.

Mindfulness for Everyday Health
Mindfulness is the specific practice of creating heightened awareness of the present moment and quieting down our inner dialogues. Ryan Redman, MA, executive director of Flourish Foundation, will explain current findings in psychology and neuroscience that show health benefits of mindfulness, and will guide you through some mindfulness exercises to help you learn how to attend more closely to your body and mind.

Oh, Boy!
Puberty education for boys ages 9-12 and their parents. A fun and interactive way to get a better idea about puberty and early adolescence. One or both parents must accompany each child.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Parenting

Childbirth Preparation
A six-week series promoting a healthy, safe, and educated birth. Cost: $60

Home Study or Customized Childbirth Preparation
"Class in a basket" childbirth education materials for women who are either high risk or on bed rest and unable to attend regular childbirth preparation classes. Additional customized instruction may be available upon request. Please call for more information.

Childbirth Refresher
Offered to parents who have previously taken a childbirth preparation course. Review of relaxation techniques, updated information, and sibling preparation. Includes a tour of the Labor and Delivery suites. Cost: $15

Breastfeeding Successfully
A 1½ hour prenatal breastfeeding education class designed to help start your breastfeeding experience with confidence and success.

New Moms Group
Provides newborn and breastfeeding support and an opportunity to ask questions and learn the basics of caring for a new baby. The presence of professionals, as well as other new parents, makes this group a comfortable and valuable experience. Bring your baby and your lunch, if you wish.

Whole Birth Prenatal Yoga and Support Class
This class brings together elements of a traditional yoga class—stretching, strengthening, balancing, mindful awareness, and deep relaxation, with informative and supportive group discussions. Our certified child passenger safety technician can help you install your car seat before your baby is born, fit an older child to his or her seat, teach you proper installation, and check for recalls.

Breast Cancer Support and Networking Group
This group provides a connection with others who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, for information and support. Please call before attending the first time.

Look Good, Feel Better
Through a generous partnership with the American Cancer Society, we have wigs, scarves, hats and make-up available for people who have had a diagnosis of cancer. Professionally trained staff will work one-on-one or with a group to create a look that feels good!

CPR and First Aid Classes

AED Heartsaver CPR
Learn when to call 911, how to give CPR, how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and how to provide relief from choking. This course covers American Heart Association techniques for adult and child CPR and AED and infant CPR. Pre-registration required; please no walk-ins. Cost: $60

Depression Screening
The National Depression Screening program provides increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression and mental health resources in the community. If you think you may be suffering from depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress, call for a confidential, free, one-hour screening with a licensed mental health counselor. We can screen adults and older adolescents. An appointment is required; available in Spanish or English.

Integrative Therapies

Mixed Level Yoga
This class offers a variety of yoga styles including traditional, gentle low back, restorative, and chair yoga. Beginners as well as intermediate students are welcome. Accommodations can be made for those with specific needs and unique conditions. Drop-in attendance welcome at any time in this 9-week series.

Classes are offered to the community through our American Diabetes Association-recognized program, and are taught by a nurse and dietitian team at our St. Luke’s Hailey Clinic.

Medical Nutrition Therapy Counseling
Individual appointments with a dietitian are available to community members for a variety of nutrition topics. These include nutrition as it relates to disease management, prevention, and wellness.

These interactive classes are offered with a combination of individual and group sessions led by a dietitian and a team of healthcare professionals.
