Dr. Brooks is an investigator in the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG), a national network involved in the research of common eye disorders in children.
Dr. Brooks earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, graduating summa cum laude. He is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society.
In his free time he enjoys backpacking, fly fishing, and spending time with his wife and five children.
Kevin Gertsch, MD has clinical interests in surgical and medical management of pediatric and adult strabismus, pediatric cataracts, uveitis, amblyopia, genetic syndromes, congenital ptosis and ocular motility disorders secondary to cranial nerve palsies, thyroid ophthalmopathy, and trauma. He is also trained to manage retinopathy of prematurity. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Gertsch's primary goal as a clinician is to help children and their families understand the diseases affecting them and to help guide treatment to give the best visual outcomes possible. Prior to joining St. Luke's, he worked as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, and he also served in a private practice multi-specialty group in the suburbs of Atlanta.
Dr. Gertsch earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Brigham Young University. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, running, hiking, reading, cooking, and going on adventures with his family.
Scott Larson, MD is interested in all aspects of pediatric eye care, and has dedicated his career to improving the lives of children by improving their vision. He has a special interest in the medical and surgical correction of eye misalignment, amblyopia, cataract, tear duct, and refractive problems in children. He also works with adults who have eye misalignment and double vision using optical, medical, and surgical techniques.
Dr. Larson comes to St. Luke's from the University of Iowa where he was the William E. Scott Professor for Pediatric Ophthalmology since 2016. He was the vice chair for clinical affairs and the director of fellowship programs for the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Before his time in Iowa, Dr. Larson was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Utah, Moran Eye Center.
Dr. Larson has been active in education and research. He has published over 50 journal articles and book chapters and has given over 60 invited lectures and scientific presentations in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia on many topics related to pediatric eye disease. He serves the American Board of Ophthalmology by developing content and as an oral examiner to help improve the next generations of ophthalmologists.
Dr. Larson has been an active advocate for pediatric ophthalmology issues throughout his career. In his free time, he has volunteered as an officer for the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology and the Utah Ophthalmology Society. He serves as an executive board member of American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and is serving his second term as councilor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Council. He received the AAPOS and AAO honor awards as well as the AAPOS Presidential Award for his service to those organizations.
Ilya Leyngold, MD specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures of the eyelids and face, and has a subspecialty in oculofacial plastic surgery. He is board certified in ophthalmology and a member of American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and the North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons.
Dr. Leyngold has taught his surgical techniques at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Duke universities. He has also presented his work in Europe, South America, and Canada.
Dr. Leyngold was recognized as one of the top 10 most successful professionals under the age of 40 by the South Tampa Magazine and served as a team doctor for Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Team. He developed multiple cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and facial procedures, publishing over 60 original research papers, reviews, commentaries, and book chapters. He also edited a textbook on corneal neurotization, a reconstructive procedure that restores corneal nerve function and health.
In his spare time, Dr. Leyngold enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He also enjoys working out, skiing, hiking, and standup paddleboarding.
