AMA acknowledges St. Luke’s efforts focused on physician, advanced practice provider and health care well-being

St. Luke's Health System has earned recognition from the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine organization for its work toward initiating and building a systemwide well-being program.

The distinction from AMA is granted to organizations that attest to the specific and evidence-based criteria of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to well-being within the work environment.

“This AMA recognition shows that St. Luke's has put a foundation in place in order to continue our journey toward organization-wide well-being practices and resources for our care teams,” said Katie Schneider, M.D., St. Luke's system medical director for provider well-being. “It’s been critical that our leadership is involved and engaged as we create the important building blocks toward well-being.”

As burnout has spiked among physicians, advanced practice providers and other health care professionals, it has become necessary to focus on improving and supporting the well-being of team members, Schneider said.

St. Luke's has intentionally utilized internal data to align national guidelines to local needs and remains focused on continual improvement of the well-being of team members.

"The goal of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program is to unite the health care community in building a nationwide culture committed to the well-being of clinical care teams by helping health organizations invest in action plans promoting professional fulfillment and meaning that clinicians find in caring for their patients,” said Christine Sinsky, M.D., AMA vice president of professional satisfaction.

Since its inception in 2019, the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program has recognized more than 100 organizations across the country. In 2023, a total of 72 health systems nationwide earned recognition with documented efforts to reduce system-level drivers of work-related burnout and demonstrated competencies in commitment, assessment, leadership, efficiency of practice environment, teamwork and support.
