Baseline ImPACT Testing

The baseline ImPACT® test is a preseason physical of the brain for athletes, tracking information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. It’s not an IQ or full neuropsychological evaluation, but rather a tool that can be compared with a later ImPACT test taken after a suspected concussion. The preseason and post-injury test results may be considered by a physician, along with a neurological exam, balance testing, detailed medical history, and the input of those around the injured athlete, to assess an injury. It may also help your care team determine when return-to-play is appropriate and safe.

Test Details

ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized exam given to athletes before beginning contact sport practice or competition. This non-invasive test is set up in a “video-game” format on a computer, and takes about 30 minutes to complete. St. Luke’s offers this testing for kids ages 12 years and older. Your child’s baseline ImPACT test results will be saved in our database and released to requesting parents, schools, or physicians in the event of a concussion. We recommend a baseline test every two years unless your child has sustained a concussion.
