Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Helping You Feel Comfortable and In Control
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate surrounds the urethra—the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. As the gland grows, it can press against or narrow the urethra, leading to urinary issues such as difficulty starting urination, a weak stream, or frequent urges to go.
BPH is a common part of aging for men and is not related to prostate cancer. While it can be bothersome, it’s typically not a serious health concern. In fact, about half of men over the age of 75 experience symptoms related to an enlarged prostate.
Depending on your condition, you may be a candidate for minimally invasive treatment options at St. Luke's, including HoLEP (Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate); UroLift, which pins back prostate tissue; and Rezum, which uses steam to shrink the prostate.
