Sexual Assault Examinations

Female nurse comforts young woman

Everyone deserves care that is compassionate, respectful, and guided by their choices. This is especially important after sexual assault. St. Luke’s sexual assault examination services provide specialized medical care and support in a safe, confidential environment, whether or not you choose to involve law enforcement.

Care after a sexual assault is available at all St. Luke’s emergency departments. Many of our EDs are staffed with specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) who focus on your physical and emotional well‑being. They explain each step of the exam, proceed only with your consent, and are there to support you, answer questions, and help you feel informed and in control throughout your visit.

To ensure timely access to expert care in every community, St. Luke’s emergency departments use onsite SANEs or the SAFE‑T System™ (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination–Telehealth). Using secure telehealth technology, the SAFE‑T system connects onsite clinicians with highly experienced SANEs who provide real‑time guidance during exams. This approach helps ensure consistent, high‑quality, trauma‑informed care close to home, reducing the need for travel and minimizing delays.

Exams may include medical care, injury assessment, and—if you choose—evidence collection. You may stop or decline any part of the exam at any time. Advocacy services, language support, and follow‑up resources are available to support your healing.
