We can also help maximize your performance level. Our physicians and athletic trainers are committed to providing the highest level of orthopedic care and medical support for individual patients, as well as regional and national athletic teams. From diagnosis to treatment, from rehab to recovery, we'll get you back in action.

Athletic Training Community Outreach

The athletic training outreach program at St. Luke's Sports Medicine is one of the premier outreach programs in Idaho and the Pacific northwest. Our team supports a wide range of athletes year round throughout southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon, including professional, collegiate, and high school individuals and teams, as well as youth and club sports organizations, competitive rodeos, and community events.

Our team offers you the opportunity to train like a pro, with the pros. Programs include injury risk assessments, running gait analysis, and AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® training.

  • Orthopedic Surgery

    Biography

    James T. Beckmann, MD, MS, AAOS, ABOS is fellowship trained in orthopedic sports medicine surgery specializing in arthroscopy of the hip, knee, and shoulder in both adults and pediatric patients. He currently serves as the medical director for the St. Luke’s athletic training residency program and as an orthopedic team physician for the Idaho Steelheads, Boise Hawks, US Soccer Federation, and Ridgevue Warhawks.

    Dr. Beckmann’s primary surgical specialties include: complex knee ligamentous reconstruction including ACL, patellar dislocation, meniscal tears, and cartilage restoration procedures; hip arthroscopy for structural disorders in athletes including labral repair; and shoulder disorders of the rotator cuff, labrum, and biceps tendon. In addition, he has expertise in tendon repairs of the hamstrings, biceps, and Achilles tendons. 

    Dr. Beckmann completed his specialty training at Stanford University, serving as an orthopedic team physician for their football, basketball, and volleyball teams. In 2018, he was selected as one of two physicians worldwide to complete a travelling fellowship in hip arthroscopy through the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA). As a travelling fellow, he worked with leaders in the field of hip arthroscopy learning state-of-the-art techniques in hip arthroscopy including Drs. Marc Philippon and Thomas Byrd. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and written seven chapters in prominent orthopedic textbooks.  

    Dr. Beckmann earned his bachelor’s degree at Duke University. He completed medical school at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also pursued a master’s degree in clinical trials.  He pursued his orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Utah where he served as chief resident.

    Biography

    Charles Clark III, MD is an orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery. He treats all conditions of the shoulder and elbow such as arthritis, rotator cuff tears, instability and other tendon injuries. He also treats other orthopedic conditions of the upper and lower extremities, including hip and knee arthritis, as well as common conditions of the hand such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger fingers, tendinitis and arthritis.

    Dr. Clark earned his bachelor's degree at Washington University and his medical degree at Florida State University. His post-graduate training includes an orthopedic residency at the University of South Florida and the San Francisco Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship with California Pacific Orthopedics.

  • Orthopedic Surgery

    Biography

    Michael J. Curtin, MD, AAOS, ABOS, ASES is fellowship trained in orthopedic sports medicine and currently serves as the medical director for St. Luke’s Sports Medicine. His practice focuses on surgical treatment of shoulder conditions including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic labral repair and shoulder instability surgery, and disorders of the biceps tendon. He performs shoulder replacement surgery as well as reverse shoulder replacement procedures. He also performs arthroscopic surgical procedures on the knee including ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair. He has expertise in the areas of elbow arthroscopy as well as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction of the elbow (Tommy John surgery).

    Dr. Curtin is a member of the the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society, one of just three members in the state of Idaho. He is the orthopedic team physician for the College of Idaho, the Boise Hawks Baseball Club, and Eagle High School. He is also a team physician for the US Soccer Federation. While practicing in Denver prior to moving to Boise, he served as orthopedic physician for the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club and as a consultant for the Denver Broncos Football Club. He was the director of athletic medical services for alpine skiing at the Snow Basin venue, 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games.

    Dr. Curtin earned his bachelor’s degree at Yale University where he was a two-sport athlete in football and track. He received his medical degree from the University of Utah where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. He completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado.

    Biography

    Jason Daley, PA-C works with sports medicine patients, supporting sports medicine surgeon, Dr. James Beckmann. Jason has special interest in fracture management and often assists surgeons in the operating room. He truly enjoys helping patients get through their injuries so they can get back to doing what they love.

    Jason was born and raised in Boise and received his bachelor's degree in microbiology from the University of Idaho. He completed his master's degree in physician assistant studies at A.T. Still University, with focused training in sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics. In his free time, Jason enjoys running, mountain biking and spending time with his wife, kids, and dog.

  • Orthopedic Surgery

    Biography

    Dr. Florence is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and board-certified orthopedic sports medicine specialist. He provides orthopedic care of the musculoskeletal systems to improve mobility and alleviate pain in patients through conservative treatment including injections, prescribing physical therapy and fracture care and with surgery, including arthroscopy, fractures and total joint replacement of hips, knees and shoulders. 

    As an orthopedic sports medicine specialist, Dr. Florence helps athletes and physically active individuals enhance their performance through treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries. He believes the most important thing he can do for his patients is help them get back to doing the activities that bring them health and happiness, and to make their journey through recovery as comfortable as possible. 

    Prior to joining St. Luke's, Dr. Florence served as an orthopedic surgeon and orthopedic sports medicine specialist for 13 years at Estes Park Health in Colorado. In 2010 he created the hospital’s first comprehensive orthopedic surgery program. He served in several physician leadership roles, including chief of medical staff. He was active with the local high school sports teams and taught athlete injury prevention courses in the community. 

    During his residency and fellowship, Dr. Florence worked for team physicians of several professional and collegiate sports teams: New York Yankees, New York Jets, the Professional Golf Association, U.S. Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams, NBA referees and others.  

    Dr. Florence and his wife are both originally from Idaho. He grew up in Middleton and frequently skied and vacationed in McCall as a youth. They are looking forward to raising their children in McCall and being closer to their families in southwest Idaho.   

    In his free time, he enjoys downhill and back country skiing, mountain biking, basketball, hunting, fishing, hiking and carpentry. He also spends time volunteering at his church and other community organizations.

    Biography

    Tobias (Tobi) Gopon, MD, ABFP, CAQSM is fellowship trained in sports medicine, specializing in non-operative sports medicine for pediatric and adult injuries. His areas of focus include shoulder, hip, and knee injuries; concussion and fracture management; and lumbar spine pain. He specializes in image-guided procedures including ultrasound guided joint injections, Tenex procedures and lumbar epidural steroid injections (ESIs)/medial branch blocks and ablations.

    Dr. Gopon is currently serving as the team physician for the Boise Timber/Thorns youth soccer club, Boise Hawks, Nampa High School, and the Idaho Interscholastic Mountain Bike League. He also travels to support the U.S. national ski team. 

    During his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Utah, he cared for members of the U.S. national ski and speed skating teams, University of Utah student athletes, and winter sport athletes as a physician at Park City Ski Clinic.

    Dr. Gopon earned his bachelor's degree at St. Olaf College. He played collegiate and semi-professional soccer, and continues to play in Boise’s adult league. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, fly fishing, skiing, and mountain biking.

    Biography

    Bradley Heninger, PA-C sees patients in the clinic and assists during surgeries.

    Brad grew up in the Treasure Valley and earned a bachelor's degree in zoology at Idaho State University. He completed his master's degree at Touro University Nevada. In his free time, he enjoys sports, outdoor activities, and spending time with his wife and kids.

    Biography

    Alejandro A. Homaechevarria MD, ABFP, CAQSM ("Dr. Alex") is fellowship trained in sports medicine and specializes in pediatric and adult sports injuries, back pain, shoulder and knee injuries, concussion management, and fracture management. He also specializes in adult and geriatric degenerative arthritis joint evaluation and treatment. He has advanced training in lumbar spine interventional injection procedures, collaborating frequently with the spine wellness team at St. Luke’s.

    Dr. Homaechevarria serves as a team physician for US Soccer Federation and has served as a physician for the US Ski Team. He is the medical advisor for Bogus Basin Ski Resort and helped develop the Ski Injury prevention software program designed to lower injury rates at ski resorts in both winter and summer. Dr. Homaechevarria has been the head physician at Bishop Kelly High School since 2001, and currently serves as the medical director of the Boise Twilight Criterium, Boise's only professional cycling race.

    Dr. Homaechevarria completed his sports medicine fellowship at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital and University of Utah, where he cared for members of the US Ski and Speed Skating teams and the University of Utah athletes, and served as a physician at the Park City Resort Ski Clinic.

    Kati Johnson, PA-C is a physician assistant supporting orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, Dr. Michael Curtin, focusing on conditions and injuries of the shoulder and knee. She sees patients in the clinic and assists during surgeries. She loves helping patients get back to the activities they love.

    Kati earned a bachelor's degree in health science from Boise State University and a bachelor's degree in physician assistant studies from Long Island University. In her free time, Kati enjoys outdoor adventures and spending time with her family and dogs.

  • Biography

    Chad Johnson, DO is fellowship trained in primary care sports medicine, focusing on non-operative musculoskeletal care. He is passionate about helping injured athletes return to their sport and specializes in medical management of acute injuries, overuse injuries, injury prevention, and sports-related concussion. He also specializes in conservative management of osteoarthritis, including injection therapies and regenerative medicine. Ultrasound is an essential tool in his clinic and he loves the outcomes that can be achieved though precisely placed medication with ultrasound-guided procedures. He has taught diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound nationally.

    Dr. Johnson provides medical coverage for various community activities, tournaments, races, rodeos, and other events that could lead to participant injury. He is a member of the Justin Boots Sports Medicine team and enjoys covering rodeos and working frequently with rodeo athletes.

    Dr. Johnson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in medical microbiology and immunology from Brigham Young University – Idaho. He went to medical school at Touro University, completed his internship at Rapid City Regional Family Medicine Residency, and went on to finish residency in family medicine at Idaho State University. Dr. Johnson completed a sports medicine fellowship at Utah Valley Sports Medicine, where he worked closely with both Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University athletics.

    Biography

    Alison R. Kinsler, MD, FAAOS specializes in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, and general orthopedics, including fracture care. She treats both adult and pediatric patients. Her surgical specialties include a spectrum of shoulder surgeries including shoulder replacements (both reverse and anatomic) and arthroscopic procedures to treat rotator cuff, labrum and biceps tendon disorders. Dr. Kinsler also has expertise in knee surgery including ACL tears, meniscus repairs, cartilage restoration, patella instability, and multi-ligamentous knee injuries.

    Dr. Kinsler earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at Old Dominion University, where she was also a Division I soccer player. After completing her medical school training at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, she then completed her residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center while on active duty. She served in the US Army as an orthopedic surgeon finishing her military career as a major with nine years of service. Prior to joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Kinsler practiced at William Beaumont Army Medical Center where she trained orthopedic residents in advanced sports medicine surgery and was responsible for sports medicine curriculum for resident education.

    Biography

    Christopher T. Lawler, MD, CAQSM is board certified in emergency medicine and fellowship trained in sports medicine. He specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal injuries and fractures in adults and children, knee and shoulder injuries, and conservative management of osteoarthritis. He also treats athletes with conditions such as concussions, soft tissue injuries, skin disorders, and other sports-related conditions, and has a particular interest in sports injuries related to football, ice hockey, and gymnastics.

    Dr. Lawler is active in St. Luke's Sports Medicine's outreach program, providing care to local sports organizations, high schools, and events. He serves as team physician for the Idaho Steelheads, Idaho Stampede, Northwest Nazarene University, and Kuna High School. He previously served as team physician for the Boise Burn.

    Dr. Lawler completed his internship at Baystate Medical Center. He completed his residency training in emergency medicine at Michigan State University, where he volunteered with the university athletic sports medicine program and worked with the ice hockey and gymnastics teams. He performed his sports medicine fellowship in Boise, where he worked with Boise State University athletic teams.
      

    In his free time, Dr. Lawler enjoys an active lifestyle with his wife and daughters participating in water sports, snowmobiling, fishing, and hunting. He is also active with his daughters' sports teams as a volunteer and coach.

    Biography

    Kurt J. Nilsson, MD is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and specializes in non-operative management of acute and chronic shoulder, hip, knee, elbow and ankle injuries and concussions in active children and adults. He has special training in the use of ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional purposes and uses it extensively in his clinic for minimally invasive procedures, such as calcific tendinitis treatment and targeted injections. 

    Dr. Nilsson is a team physician for the College of Idaho, the US Ski Team, and US Soccer Federation; and has served as a concussion consultant for USA Cycling. He has also served as the medical director of the St. Luke’s Concussion Clinic since it inception in 2011 and is medical director for St. Luke’s Applied Research.

    Dr. Nilsson earned his bachelor's degree at California Lutheran University and a master's degree in exercise science from Boise State University, in addition to his medical training.

    Biography

    Dr. Kaleb Redden DO, ABFP, CAQSM, CRP is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician specializing in non-operative management of orthopedic injury in pediatric and adult patients including shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, wrist, ankle, neck and back injuries. He also has special training in the use of ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional purposes, including minimally invasive procedures and targeted injections. Along with treatment of both acute and chronic injury, Dr. Redden is highly trained in sports performance and sports nutrition with a special interest in fitness. He is also a certified ring-side physician and combat sports medicine specialist currently serving as the deputy commissioner and chief medical officer for the Idaho Athletic Commission. 

    Dr. Redden is one of the team physicians for Mountain View High School, local Idaho rodeos, Idaho Steelheads semi-professional hockey, UFC MMA, Bellator MMA, Kaged Muscle Fitness (which includes professional MMA fighters), Olympic gymnasts, collegiate and professional football players, professional power lifters, and bodybuilders. 

    Dr. Redden completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute where he cared for athletes connected to Boise State University, Capital High School, and the Onward Shay marathon, as well as fighters with the UFC and Kaged Muscle Athletes. He served as a chief resident at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho and was the founder and president of the sports medicine club for his medical school, Pacific Northwest University of Health Science. He completed his bachelor's degrees in exercise science and chemistry at Utah State University, where he also competed as a student athlete. 

    Dr. Redden is married with three children. In his free time, he enjoys lifting weights and spending time outdoors fishing, hunting, mountain biking, playing sports, and riding motorcycles. His favorite quote is: ”There is no substitute for strength and no excuse for lack of it.”

    Biography

    Luke Sugden, DO, FAWM is a fellowship trained primary care sports medicine physician. He specializes in non-surgical orthopedics and musculoskeletal medicine. He enjoys working individually with patients to find treatment plans that get them back to the activities that they love. He has special interest in endurance, outdoor sports and wilderness medicine, and is a fellow in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.

    Dr. Sugden earned his bachelor’s degree in microbiology and a minor in chemistry from Boise State University. He attended medical school at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. His family medicine residency training took place at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho: Magic Valley Rural Training Track. He then went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship through the Montana Family Medicine Residency.

    Dr. Sugden is originally from Jerome, Idaho, and is thrilled to be home caring for the community that raised him. In his free time, Dr. Sugden and his wife enjoy running, hiking, backpacking, road cycling, cross country skiing, and just about any other outside activity. He is always looking for ways to get outdoors and experience an adventure.

    Biography

    Robert N. Walker, MD is an orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in sports medicine. His surgical practice is limited to the treatment of disorders and injuries of the knee, with particular interests in ligament injury/reconstruction, meniscal injury, and patellofemoral disorders. He especially enjoys helping aging athletes continue to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.  

    Dr. Walker currently serves as the medical director for orthopedics at St. Luke's. He has been the head team physician for the Idaho Steelheads hockey team for more than 20 years and is a team physician for the Justin Rodeo Sports Medicine Team. He previously served as a team physician for the Idaho Stampede basketball team, Northwest Nazarene University, Bishop Kelly High School, Nampa High School, and the Boise Burn and Idaho Stallions professional football teams.  

    Dr. Walker completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University, and remained at Vanderbilt for his sports medicine fellowship as one of the first two sports medicine fellows in that program.

    When he's not working, Dr. Walker spends time with his family at their farm outside of Boise. He enjoys working on the farm, exercise, photography, and upland bird hunting.

The Orthopedic Rehabilitation team at St. Luke’s is dedicated to helping you achieve your movement goals and maximizing your body’s ability to move freely, without pain. 

Our inpatient program helps patients who have undergone a major orthopedic surgery, experienced an injury, or had an amputation. Our outpatient clinics provide support as you recover from an injury, surgery, or chronic condition.
