Planned Giving Donor Stories

Marilyn

Marilyn and Dr. Tom Beck met at Utah State University, married shortly after completing their undergraduate education, and relocated to Boise in 1975.

Dr. Beck was instrumental in creating the Mountain States Tumor Institute, now known as St. Luke's Cancer Institute, and served as its medical director for two decades. The institute provides world-class cancer care and offers Idaho's only pediatric oncology services in conjunction with St Luke's Children's Hospital and the state's only hemophilia center.

Marilyn has served on a variety of boards and committees over the years. She also appreciates the care she receives at St. Luke's and was inspired to create the Thomas M. Beck Patient Assistance Fund in memory of her husband and his many years of service. This fund provides financial support to St. Luke’s Cancer Institute patients and their families during their cancer journeys.

Marilyn supports many organizations and appreciates the option to use her IRA to complete these gifts. “Why would I take my RMD (required minimum distribution) and pay taxes on it, when I can just gift it to charity in the form of a direct transfer?” In 2023, she used her QCD qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allotment of $105,000 from IRA to its fullest extent, ensuring many patients will benefit from her generosity.
